The ABB Story

In 1987, Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget and Brown, Boveri & Cie merged forces to create ABB (ASEA Brown Boveri). The headquarters of the newly formed company is the defunct headquarters of the parent companies, with one being in Zurich and the other in Västerås. This merger created an industrial giant in ABB.

ABB commenced operations the following year. The company majored in robotics, power generation, industrial automation, transmission & distribution, and electric transportation. Within a span of two years (1988-1989), ABB acquired 55 companies, expanding their assets and global presence. In the early 90s, ABB established its presence in the Central and Eastern parts of Europe. In 1991, ABB hired 10,000 staff there, and by the following year, the figure skyrocketed to 20,000 employees.

This growth and expansion played a similar scene in Asia. The company has continued making strategic acquisitions since then. In 2014, ABB announced that it would establish a manufacturing plant in Nigeria. As of today, the company has a modest presence in the country.
