What it does: ABB is a manufacturing company that produces electrical equipment for businesses.

Mission: We succeed by creating superior value. We push the boundaries of technology to drive performance to new levels. We energize the transformation of society and industry to achieve a more productive, sustainable future.

Best known for: Their robotic products, used in factories.

Size & presence: 105,000 people working in more than 100 countries.

The good bits: ABB is one of the world’s leading and largest electrical equipment manufacturers — making it the perfect place to begin your career if you are interested in the industry.

The not-so-good bits: ABB’s scale of operations, coupled with its desire to stay competitive, often translates to a lot of corporate restructuring — meaning it’s possible that you may be rotated to an entirely different function than when you started out.

The ABB Story

ABB’s origins started with the merger between a company from Sweden (Allmänna Svenska Elektriska Aktiebolaget) and another company from Switzerland (Brown, Boveri & Cie). ABB itself is an abbreviation of ASEA Brown Boveri — the names of said companies.

Both companies were manufacturers of electrical products, specifically generators, AC/DC motors, and transformers. Early on, ABB was best known for its locomotive products, but since the 2000s, they have shifted the company’s focus to produce more motors and electrical components, for large-scale manufacturing purposes, alongside other industries such as mining, oil, and gas as well as construction.

Today, ABB is expanding its product line by developing needed infrastructures for electric vehicles.

Culture & Vibe

As a company that prides itself on being at the forefront of mechanical and electrical engineering developments relating to heavy machinery, it makes sense that innovation is a core value of the company. And it’s clear that the company has yet to stop doing so since it became ABB — as one can see with its current involvement in electric vehicles infrastructure development.

Many of its past employees also applaud ABB’s agility when it comes to doing business — especially considering its scale of operations and size. Part of this can definitely be attributed to ABB’s use of lean principles in its operations, allowing it to maintain competitiveness and venture into new industries despite continuously serving value for existing customers.

Career Prospects

ABB offers multiple openings each year for any college or university students interested in doing an internship at ABB. Internship positions are open for Bachelor’s or even Master’s degree holders, and the duration starts from two months to up to two years.

For the U.S., ABB also offers internship positions for Summer/Fall term placement, for positions that range from engineering to marketing. For a program called LEAD Internship, ABB usually requests students who are studying Mechanical, Electromechanical, or Industrial Engineering at the Bachelor’s level.

Aside from internship opportunities, ABB has several programs aimed specifically at recent college and university graduates. Some of these programs are ABB Global Robotics & Discrete Automation Trainee Program and the Global Early Talent Program.

Recruitment Process

ABB's recruitment process looks something like this: first, you’ll send your application through their career website. The company also gives you the option of linking your LinkedIn profile to their site to make the process more seamless for you.

If you’re shortlisted, ABB’s recruiting team would reach out to you and send you an email to invite you to an online assessment process. Then, you’ll have to pass a series of interviews and may need to pass certain background checks, depending on the role you’re applying for. If you pass, an offer will be made.

Remuneration & Benefits

According to Glassdoor, ABB’s interns receive around $40,000-$50,000 per year. For full-time positions, pay will vary depending on the position — even when you have the same experience level. For example, an Engineer at ABB may make around $80,000 per year, while an Account Manager can make more than $100,000 per year.

Aside from salary, ABB’s employees also receive other benefits from the company. Some of them are 25 days of paid time off, flexible working hours, and health plus life insurance.

Social Contributions

ABB is engaged with numerous charitable initiatives across the world, with some done specifically by branch offices that operate in the region, whilst other initiatives are conducted on an international scale.

For the latter, one of those initiatives is The ABB Jürgen Dormann Foundation for Engineering Education, a scholarship for engineering students awarded to those studying in partner universities in Bulgaria, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Malaysia, Poland, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey, and Vietnam.
