The ABSA Story

ABSA Group Ltd. was initially established in 1991 as Barclays Africa Group Ltd in South Africa. Its headquarters was established in Johannesburg. Its existence was brought about by the union of some South African Banks, including the Allied Bank and United Bank. A year after the merger, ABSA bought the entire shares of the Bankorp Group, a merger of Banking, Senbank, and Trustbank.

During the initial phase of the merger, the banks operated individually with their respective names. However, seven years later, they became one bank. In 1999, ABSA rebranded to ABSA Group Ltd. In 2005, Barclays Bank bought the majority of the shares of ABSA Group Ltd. The bank's name changed to Barclays Africa Group Ltd but later reversed to ABSA Group Ltd in 2018.
