The Aecom Story

The history of Aecom can be traced to the establishment of Ashland Oil & Refining Company by Fred Miles in Kentucky in 1910. The company acquired a lot of lands, and Fred Miles established the Swiss Oil Company in Lexington. Later on, the company went through hard times, and this led to the resignation of Fred Miles, who was succeeded by Paul Blazer. He became the first CEO of the restructured company, Ashland Oil & Refining Company. Thirty years after Blazer took over, the company purchased Warren Brothers, a highway construction firm. This move launched them into the construction business.

Over time, Ashland established itself as one of the leading road-construction companies in the US, laying the foundation for Aecom. The company made some strategic acquisitions and advanced technology, making it a highly diversified organisation. Ashland's business interests include chemical, highway construction, petrochemical, and construction materials. In 1980, Ashland became a modified holding firm. 1990 was a significant year for the company because it was when AECOM was created from the spin-off of Ashland Technology. The company went public in 2007.
