The Arup Story

In 1946, Sir Ove Arup established Ove N. Arup Consulting Engineers in London. Arup made a reputation for himself in the 30s as an authority in reinforced concrete. He was credited for projects such as the Penguin Pool at London Zoo. When the company started growing, Arup refused to acquire other companies, which was the common practice in the industry. Arup grew organically by establishing new offices in locations that were deemed fit for the company's business. Seventeen years after Arup founded his company, he opened Arup Associates, a new division of the firm, with Philip Dowson, an architect.

With time, Arup Associates established itself in the industry through its design portfolio for the built environment. The company did this by taking on and executing projects that were considered logistically and structurally complex. Arup took part in several projects during the formative years of the company. One of the most notable ones included the Sydney Opera House, in which he was the foremost engineer. This project single-handedly launched his firm into the elite league of engineering consultancy firms. The design of the Opera House project was the first model generated by the Ferranti Pegasus computer. Over time, Arup comprised multiple independent practices across the world.
