Pros & Cons

  • People I work with, the scope of projects (quite big so lots of exposure), monthly flex hours, additional leave purchase, profit share twice a year
  • Interesting projects
  • The fantastic culture, especially within my team. The clear commitment to sustainability and actually doing what they say they will do. The staff wellbeing initiatives such as lunch and learns, salad bar, office events and more. Profit share is a great motivator and bonus.
  • My colleagues and seniors I work with are friendly and approachable. The company also appears to care about their employees and makes an effort to foster an inclusive and respectful culture. It is also easy to work from offices in other cities.
  • Timesheets and internal staff
  • There can be long work hours leading up to project deadlines
  • Intense deadlines that can be stressful
  • The work can be inconsistent (which can be a plus and minus at the same time), meaning it is often a rollercoaster of very busy times or lull periods. And due to being a large global company, there is many internal things to learn about, which after 2 years, I am still learning about.

Arup allows all team to progress anywhere within the company they feel most comfortable, this can even be into areas not covered by your degree if you demonstrate your learnt knowledge is satisfactory to complete the role. Within a team there is an emphasis to always do what makes you happy and managers regularly check in to make sure this is maintained. If it is that you are unhappy they will plan a way for team to progress out of their role and into a role they are more interested in.

Arup has a very strong commitment CSR, with a key feature being the allocation of a portion of profits towards community engagement activities such as providing engineering or consulting services to charities and disaster relief. Graduates are encouraged to become involved with the company's community engagement initiatives. Participation in charitable activities such as donating blood, financial donations and fundraising activities is also encouraged and team or office level involvement in these is common throughout the year.

Culture
Arup has a fairly flexible working structure with both working from home as well as in the office, my team particularly coordinates team days in the office to facilitate collaboration. The hours are flexible as well, with allocated weekly hours that can be completed when works best as long as you are available for meetings. There are regular in office events, providing opportunities for officewide socialising as well as learning from different teams. There are also often opportunities to socialise outside of work as well with after work drinks, networking opportunities, functions etc. The office structure is broken down into teams for various disciplines, but there are plenty of opportunities to work on projects in other teams depending on capacity and interests. Cooperation and teamwork are encouraged with everyone willing to lend a hand or offer advice for any questions.

I am currently working on a handful of projects and my day-to-day responsibilities depend on which stage these projects are at. For example, I am currently working on a project which is in pre-Tender phase, meaning my day is filled with drawing details, completing engineering calculations and developing performance documentation (Specification) to pull together a package to go out to Tender. Other projects are in Review stages, meaning I am reviewing Subcontractors work (calcs and details).

Management
My manager has been fantastic and a great example of effective leadership. They are very accessible, and I feel comfortable being myself and open with them. They care about your wellbeing and support your needs - whether it is for work, personal or lifestyle. Performance feedback through appraisals is very thorough and you will often be praised or recognised for outstanding work.

Office Work Environment
I work in the Melbourne office and the facilities, location and space are fantastic. There has been a lot of thought put into the design of the office and it pays off. It is an open plan office with great facilities, natural lighting and plants. The dress code ranges from business attire to smart casual. There is no strict dress code, especially after covid. People are allowed to wear what they want (bearing in mind that they dress appropriately for certain client meetings).

Recruitment
The process started with an online application, followed by an online psychometric test. From here shortlisted interview candidates were invited to a meet and greet in the office, which was great to meet staff and other candidates, and helped to break the ice and provide a bit of familiarity when it came to the in person interview the week after.

Salary
Arup does profit share twice a year which is nice. but some other benefits/bonus such as bike and solar panel loans are underutilized. The pay appears average compared to jobs at other companies. I can also buy (salary sacrifice) leave to get extra days of leave.
