Pros & Cons

  • Clubs and events are a ton of fun, getting food at work is really nice too. The vibies really try to make things fun and exciting.
  • The people I work with are all amazing & I also have a very supportive manager, which makes coming to work everyday an absolute joy! I also get to work on a range of different things, which means I can better hone my skills.
  • The culture. Canva is a company that sees their employees as their biggest asset; this leads to them investing money into us to ensure we fill fulfilled in all areas of life through regular social events, volunteering opportunities and career growth.
  • My team dynamic is not good. I feel like my manager and other teammates are condescending. I struggle with even asking for help because the responses I've gotten back in the past have been very discouraging. I think it may just be my team though, so I think I just got unlucky. Part of this may before joining, the grads were sent out a form for what teams they were most interested in, however neither me or a lot of my friends got anything close to what they put down on that form.
  • Barely any pay transparency, some of the policies around gender diversity is subpar at best (e.g. gender affirmation policies).
  • Only thing might be confusion due to the business constantly changing (but that's really a growth opportunity).

Canva is a very philanthropic company. Not only is Canva committed to doing the most good it can via the Canva Foundation, there is also a donation matching policy for all employees, wherein Canva matches any donation that you make to a valid non-profit organisation. We also get 3 days of paid leave a year to do volunteering.

Culture

Culture
Canva has a strong culture of being kind and compassionate to one another, and there are very, very limited expectations to work outside of normal work hours (unless you are on-call - however this is an agreement between the employee and the team). My team has a fair bit of pair programming and collaborative work, however this can vary across teams. The hierarchal structure is not necessarily imposed very strongly at Canva, however sometimes senior leadership can seem a little bit further away. I am personally not too bothered about it - you can always Slack them specifically if you need, there are not necessarily many hoops to jump through to talk to them. There are also various Canva clubs (both remote and local-friendly), which provide great opportunities to get to know other Canvanauts, both in and outside your specialty.

Equal recruitment opportunities, support groups for minority groups. Maternity/paternity leave, and child-care programs for employee's kids during the school holidays.

Satisfaction
A typical day starts off with a standup, tune in to all-hands meetings while I review pull requests. Then I get to spend about half the day doing focused work (taking breaks in between, of course).

Management
Yes, my manager is fairly informal which makes him approachable and easy to work with. He is a good mentor but he isn't as technical nowadays so I often go to other team members for technical support.

Canva's headquarters are in Surry Hills, only a 5-minute walk from Central station. The rooftop is open to anyone and offers an unparalleled view of the city skyline and sunsets. The dress code is very casual, where you are free to wear whatever makes you comfortable.

Recruitment

Recruitment
The interviewers were all really friendly and respectful. I was hired as an intern and then I received a return offer upon completion of my internship, so I did not go through the traditional grad hiring process. The interview questions were doable, and I found the interview process much, much nicer than a lot of other companies I interviewed at, for similar positions. I had technical questions as well as behavioural questions - which unpacked my personality and passions as well as my technical abilities. When preparing for the engineering interview it's important to be able to break down the problems to first principles. The interviewers are not there to make your life difficult, but instead to do your best work. The best advice I could give is to think of the technical interviews as a pair programming session.

Salary

Salary
Very competitive base salary for a graduate role with additional stock options. Additionally, there's yearly salary reviews to make sure that employees pay matches their growth and impact in Canva, whilst taking into account external factors (i.e. inflation, market conditions, etc). Club events are all pretty much subsidised, so lots of events, like marvel movies, food clubs, boba club, ice cream club etc.

Training
At Canva you get to work with a team of talented engineers. Being a recent university graduate, it was overwhelming to see the amount of training and support that I received from my peers.

Very flexible, whether you need to take a couple of hours for an appointment or are running late from lunch. The company trusts that employees will "be good humans" and do their best work.
