What's your job about?
My employer is a global leader of logistics industry and my responsibility falls on the finance/accounting side of the business. In my first rotation, I had spent 6 months in company’s warehouse to assist a series of projects, including turning the operation procedures into SOPs and building up dashboard to reflect the staff productivity. Now I am in my second rotation back in the Rhodes office under Finance-Transport team, managing all weekly invoicing clients and liaising with their transport managers, reconciling cost/charges for specific carriers and assist training new team member.
What's your background?
I was born and raised in China and came to Australia for study since high school since I always wanted to explore the world. My life was changed due to this decision; I had met people from various backgrounds and learnt to be open-minded to new values and ideas. Before joining the current company as a finance graduate, I had worked with private tuition organisation, IT supplies wholesaler, SMSF administrator & insolvency practitioner, all these experiences have advanced my analytical skill, people skill as well as ability to learn new things and manage time----all these attributes play important roles not only in helping me get my current position, but also maximising my personal growth. I have been with DHL for 10 months now.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
Definitely yes. Understanding of finance/accountancy + fast learner + strong believer in your own growth potential= pre-requisites for my job. After all, almost all skills can be learnt by formal/informal training or keen obersvation and sound thinking, but you need to have faith in yourself every step along the journey to stay positive.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
What I love most about my job is the opportunity to work with/learn from the best talents from the industry. I enjoy examining the numbers as well as helping account managers get the info they need. Every job can be tiring from time to time, but I know I am doing the right thing whenever I received compliment from my seniors or upgraded my skill a little bit.
What are the limitations of your job?
The biggest limitation (or bonus from the other side) could be flexibility in terms of working hours and geography. Working hours can fluctuate a lot depending on what role you are carrying out. And since the company is big and has multiple sites across different areas, you definitely need to be able to drive around.
