Brief History of EDF Energy

The origin of this company dates back to 2002. It's entirely owned by Électricité de France, owned by the French Government. The purchase and mergers of SEEBOARD Plc, SWEB Energy Plc, London Electricity Plc, a combined cycle gas turbine power station, and a couple of coal-fired power stations brought about the existence of this company. Seven years after inception, EDF took over the nuclear generator in the UK by purchasing share capital from the government. This made the company one of the largest electricity generators in the UK.

In late 2014, EDF sold three UK-based wind farms to the China General Nuclear Power Group for £100 million. 2018 was a year to forget for the company as it lost roughly 200,000 customers and experienced a 16.5% decline in revenue. In 2019, EDF acquired Pivot Power, a British energy startup that specialised in battery storage and other infrastructure that facilitate EV charging. In late 2021, UK nuclear stations generated 2,000 terawatt hours of electricity.

Culture & Vibe

EDF has a very healthy working culture built on diversity and inclusion. The company ensures that its workforce reflects its community and clientele. The unique thing about this firm's culture is its employee networks. There are several networks for different categories of employees, such as Women's Network, LGBTQ+ Supporters Network, Disability and Carers Network, RACE Network, Working Parents’ Network, etc. These networks give each worker a sense of belonging regardless of the diversity in race, religion, gender, sexuality, etc. Through these networks, employees get to discuss and air their views on areas of strength as well as areas that can be improved on.

It also helps that EDF listens to and values the opinions of its employees. EDF has won several diversity awards, which shows how accommodating the company is. The friendly atmosphere also ensures the freshers and interns don’t feel out of depth.

Whether you're an intern or a new graduate at the firm, there are great prospects ahead. The question is, how far is one willing to go?
