From solutions to the climate crisis to those that cater for clean water, Sierra Club fosters active participation across diverse groups.

The Sierra Club Story 

A group of passionate Californians in 1892 in a bid to raise commitment towards fostering wilderness exploration along the mountain regions of the pacific coast founded the Sierra Club. 

John Munir, the first president of the club placed the club at centre stage in political actions for the first observation throughout his leadership from 1892 - 1914. From building parks and trail buildings to resisting plans to reduce the size of Yosemite National Park, the organization gained popularity in its efforts. 

Ansel Adams also played a crucial role in propagating the club’s desire to safeguard nature through his natural landscape images. 

In the Mid 1900s, the club began to expand its operations from California to other parts of the United States, consolidating its efforts to spread with an office in Washington, D.C. From founding its office in Washington in 1963, the club continued its trail of success in locations like; the Grand Canyon, Great Lakes, Alaskan Forests, and more. 

Presently, the club has chapters throughout the United States and has remained a prominent organization protecting environmental sustainability on multiple fronts.

Finally, selected graduates and interns are offered employment in the organization and boarded into the practices and activities at the club.

Controversies 

Despite championing the cause for a sustainable, protected, and equitable environment, Sierra Club has had its fair share of controversies in the past. One of the most recent controversial situations involved the club’s founder. 

Questions about the founder’s thoughts towards racial equality garnered further steam when Sierra Club’s executive director resigned from his position. The executive director, Michael Burn questioned John Muir’s statement about racist gestures in the past. 

Other members and executives in the club called some of Burn’s comments a misrepresentation of what the club stood for. They claimed that the comments only caused more confusion in the club. 

While some comments made by Muir would be considered racist today, the club has tried to implement damage control reassuring members of the club’s commitment to ensuring a better environment.
