I prepared for the Graduate Program by keeping an open mind about my rotations and what I was going to learn on the job.

What discipline and cohort (i.e. 2018 or 2019) are you in?

2019 cohort in the HR stream.

Provide an overview of all your rotations to date:

WestConnex 3B (Rozelle Interchange Project) as an HR Graduate.

What does your typical workday look like?

On a typical day, I can be found:

  • Running new starter inductions
  • Responding to general HR enquiries
  • Ensuring our sub-contractors are compliant with the Building Code
  • Updating our project’s organisation chart
  • Organising project events and activities
  • Assisting in recruitment and interviewing candidates
  • Learning how industrial relations play out during project start-up phase
  • Being mentored by my colleagues

What has been the most interesting thing about your job?

The most interesting part of my job has been learning how an enterprise agreement is negotiated and the challenges this can bring. It’s also been interesting seeing the transition of a project from winning a tender to delivery mode.

What are the limitations of your role?

The only limitation is my own inexperience. Sometimes I want to jump on board and start helping out with some of the bigger picture parts of HR and IR, but realistically first I need to learn the basics. My colleagues have been great mentors to me, and I know that soon enough I’ll be ready to get into the thick of it.

What is something you wish you knew before you started?

I wish I knew more about the construction industry, as it’s been a big learning curve trying to piece how it all works together. There is so much terminology to learn for someone who’s never worked in construction before!

How did you prepare for starting on the Graduate Program?

I prepared for the Graduate Program by keeping an open mind about my rotations and what I was going to learn on the job. I felt it was important to enter the program with this mindset to make sure I got the most out of the journey I was about to embark on. I also researched John Holland’s existing projects and tried to get an overview of the business.
